The P-51D "Mustang" fighter was developed in 1940 at the request of the British Royal Air Force . The aircraft participated in almost all major battles during World War II, including escorting B-29s that bombed Japan in the Pacific battlefield . Between 1941 and 1945 , the U.S. Army Air Force received a total of 14,855 "Mustang" series fighters of various types, of which 7,965 P-51Ds were equipped with a teardrop cockpit with good visibility and enhanced armament . This type of aircraft was mainly used for interception and battlefield concealment missions. The P-51D aircraft served in the U.S. National Guard until 1957.
