Commissioned on July 5, 1940, the design mounted a 5cm Pak 38 L\/60 gun on a modified Borgward ammunition tractor chassis. The platform featured layered armor protection: frontal Schottenpanzer with two 4mm plates and two 3mm side and rear plates, sufficient against 7.92mm rounds. Powered by a 2.3-liter Borgward engine producing 50 HP, the 4.5-ton vehicle achieved 30 km\/h. The three-person crew included commander\/gunner, driver, and loader. Originally intended for airborne and non-motorized infantry units, the May 1941 tank program specified 3,144 planned units with production scheduled from 1943 onward. Two prototypes were completed by July 1942 for field evaluation.
